| As part of
its continued efforts to improve the customer experience, Northwest Airlines
has plan to open a $51 - million Bag - Sorting facility at the Detroit Wayne
Country Airport in the fall. The facility is expected to make baggage sorting
and screening more efficient and centralized.
The 48.000 - square - foot baggage - handling area will be in a two-story
building between the check-in and terminal. It will have 14 new screening
machines built onto the conveyor belts.
Luggage from all carriers at McNamara Terminal will be sent to the facility
for screening and redistribution.
The new baggage handling area complements other Northwest fleet and World
Club efforts. In addition, the airline has undertaken a $6 billion fleet
modernization program and spent $4.5 million on a new World Club in concourse
B of the Detroit World Gateway. Detroit now has four World Clubs, the
most of any northwest hub.
