Information about Dragon Air

Two Decades of Growth
The first flight of Hong Kong Dragon Airlines was a modest event. The aircraft, a leased Boeing 737-200A, took off from Hong Kong in July 1985 bound for exotic  Malaysian destination of Kota Kinabula.

From these simple beginnings Dragonair has grown in tandem with the dynamic economies of the Asia region into an award-winning airline, operating a unique network that connects Hong Kong and the China Mainland with the world our Hong Kong hub.

Based in purpose-built headquarters next to the award-winning Hong Kong International Airport at Check Lap Kok, we also operate a dedicated Flight Training Centre, designed to ensure we maintain the highest operational standards and to develop Hong Kong's reputation as a centre for aviation training excellence.

Key to our expertise and strong reputation is our staff of more than 2500, who come from a varied range of cultural backgrounds. They reflect the cosmopolitan nature and high professional standards that are the hallmark of Dragonair's home, Hong Kong.

Our fleet, meanwhile, reflects our commitment to quality. The regional passenger fleet comprises 26 state-of-the-art Airbus A320s, A321s and A330s, and is continuing to grow. An ongoing expansion programme will see the number rise to 33 by the end of 2006. We also operate a growing fleet of four Boeing freighters that serves destinations in Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

After almost two decades of growth and experience, Dragonair is poised to enter a new and exciting phase of expansion, and to take our unique brand of quality services and professionalism to new destinations and markets.

Connecting people and places

With a unique passenger network that covers 21 cities in the Mainland served by more than 260 flights a week, Dragonair has rightfully earned a reputation as the China expert. Underpinning this has been the unmatched experience and expertise we have gained from serving the Mainland market since 1985.

But our passenger network stretches much further afield, spanning all the major cities in the Greater China region, as well as many other exciting destinations within Asia, while our freighter network extends to major hubs in Europe and the Middle East.

From Harbin in the north to Tokyo in the east, Kota Kinabula to the south and Dhaka to the west, our full passenger network covers 30 regional destinations. Meanwhile, facilitating trade with the rest of the world, our freighter operation links Hong Kong with major hubs, including Frankfurt, London (Stansted), Amsterdam, Shanghai, Taipei and Dubai.

At the heart of it all is our Mainland connectivity. We offer more passenger frequencies to more cities than any non-Mainland airline anywhere. The major cities of Beijing and Shanghai, for example, are served on average by eight flights and 12 flights everyday, respectively.

Our expertise in the China Mainland has earned us several accolades over the years, including the Best Airline - China award in the Skytrax international traveller survey for three consecutive years from 2002 - 2004.

We have also been appointed "Official Airline to the Chinese Mainland" until 2006 by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the statutory organization that promotes Hong Kong's external trade. This means Dragonair is the airline of choice for Trade Development Council staff when travelling to the China Mainland on business.

At Your Service

Central to Dragonair's high standards is a service concept that blends consummate professionalism with traditional Hong Kong hospitality.

The Dragonair experience begins on the ground, where passengers can enjoy through check-in on a number of partner airlines to facilitate hassle-free travel, and relax in pre-departure lounges. It continues on board with cabin staff service that has been rated in the top 10 for airlines worldwide in the respected Skytrax traveller survey.

Our commitment to enhancing the travel experience of our passengers is reflected in a HK$195 million ongoing redesign project covering all the aircraft cabins in our fleet.

The most comprehensive initiative of its kind we have ever undertaken, new features include lie-flat seats and personal video monitors. It also encompasses inflight entertainment systems in all classes, new seat configurations, new color schemes, fabrics and serviceware, and in-seat power supply for laptop computers. Created in collaboration with the reowned Swiss design studio, Ludeke Design, the redesign and features are being progressively introduced.

Another service that enhances the inflight experience on Dragonair is partnerships with reowned restaurants in Hong Kong and Shanghai, which bring some of the best tastes and flavours of Asia and beyond to our passengers as they travel.

We are at the vanguard in providing new services in other areas too, with e-ticketing available on selected routes, a Flight Paging notification service, and internet booking due to be launched in the near future.

Such customer-focused initiatives are part of a continuous process of refining and introducing new and exciting service enhancements for our customers.

A Club for our most frequent travellers

As Dragonair and the services it offers have grown, so has the number of frequent travellers flying with us. In response to this, Dragonair launched a loyalty club in 2000, The Elite.

Designed to reward and recognise our most frequent passengers, the now more than 60,000 Members of The Elite enjoy exclusive privileges and travel-related offers.

While continuing to grow, the club remains exclusive, with membership representing the top flight of frequent travellers among all passengers who choose to fly with Dragonair.

The Elite has four membership tiers: Platinum; Gold; Blue; and Red. All Members enrol at Red level and can upgrade to the higher tiers depending on how often they fly with us.

Among the benefits avaliable to eligible Members are access to Dragonair Lounges, advance seat reservation, extra luggage allowance and priority baggage handling. There is also a dedicated Member area on the internet offering account access and mileage claim services. Other exclusive services include an emailed update, KA e-News, that Members can sign up for, and a published quarterly magazine featuring special offers and club information.

Whenever flying with Dragonair, Members - and indeed all Dragonair passengers - can earn mileage points if they are members of the Asia Miles or JAL Mileage Bank frequent-flyer programmes. This can be used to redeem flights or offers with a range of airlines and travel providers.

Quality Packages to Exciting Destinations

Our network covers some of the Asia's most exotic and exciting destinations; places whose names are linked with mystery, exploration and relaxation. To bring these destinations closer to travellers we established Dragonair Holidays in 1990.

The all-inclusive packages offered by Dragonair Holidays have played a pioneering role in opening up some of the region's most interesting destinations to discerning travellers. The packages cater to a wide range of tastes, and offer a winning combination of quality and value for money.

The current range of offerings cover 20 destinations in the Dragonair network, from the balmy tropical beaches of Phuket to the fantastically beautiful karst hills around Guilin, from the ancient splendour that is Angkor Wat in Cambodia to and wonder that is the Teracotta Warriors in Xian. Packages to Hong Kong are also available from a number of cities in the network, including from Beijing, Shanghai and Taipei.

For greater convenience the packages - which all include return air tickets, accommodation and insurance - are divided into "Easy", "Tours" and "Golfing" options.

Travellers can choose the flexibility of an "Easy" package, which leaves them free to create their own itinerary, or the escorted convenience of a "Tours" package, where sightseeing arrangements are in the hands of a professional, local guide. For lovers of golf, the "Golfing" packages combine the best of resort travel with days out on the finest greens at some of the best clubs in Asia.

Whichever destination they choose, travellers are assured of a trip backed by the reputation of one of the best package operators in the region.

Information on the packages is readily available at www.kaholidays.com, a user-friendly, visually rich site that provides Chinese-language information to visitors in the China Mainland and Taiwan, in addition to English.
