Introduction
Japan,
island nation in East Asia, located in the North Pacific Ocean off the
coast of the Asian continent. Japan comprises the four main islands of
Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, in addition to numerous smaller
islands. The Japanese call their country Nihon or Nippon,
which means “origin of the sun". Tokyo is the country's capital and
largest city.
Earthquakes
occur regularly in Japan, and about 40 of the country's 188 volcanoes are
active, a number representing 10 percent of the world's active volcanoes.
Japan ranks as the world's
ninth most populous nation, with a population of 126,771,660 (2001
estimate). It is also one of the most crowded, with an average population
density of 336 persons per sq km (869 per sq mi).
Japan is the world's
second largest economy after the United States. Although Japan lacks
resources, it is technologically and extremely advanced. She is the
largest holder of foreign exchange and the biggest credit nation in the
world. The country practises parliamentary democracy and the Head of State
is the Emperor.

Transportation
Taxi - Have your destination written in
Japanese. Tipping is not customary.
Railway - Japan Railways have 5 types of
train services, Bullet-train, Limited express, Express, Rapid-train and
Local train.
Driving - Most road signs are in Japanese
only. Traffic keeps to the left. Cars with English speaking drivers are
available.

Communications
Use red or blue public phones for local
calls. It costs ¥10 for 3 minutes. Use yellow public phones for long
distance domestic phone calls. Overseas calls can be made direct from
green public telephones. Hotels and post offices provide telex and fax
services within Japan.

Major Exports : Televisions, cassette and
video recorders, radios, cameras, computers, robots, other electronic and
electrical equipment, motor vehicles, ships, iron, steel, chemicals and
textiles.

Offices open from 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday

Climate
Cold and dry in the north,
warm and wetter in the south. Devastating typhoons occur from late August
to early October.

Traveller's Tips
Visitors should make appointments in
advance and be punctual. For every introduction, business cards in
Japanese or English should be presented.

Eating Out
International cuisine is available in major
cities. Traditional Japanese food is relatively expensive.

Visas
US passport holders and
most EU residents do not require a visa if staying in Japan less than 90
days.
Visitors from the rest of the countries are required to get a visa.

What to wear
Light clothes are normal in summer. In
winter, warm clothes are necessary. Suits with ties are proper for social
and business functions.
